Times may be very different from when the Hanley Economic Building Society was founded in 1854 but with assets of £430m in 2020, and over 20,000 members, the society continues to play an important role in helping savers and borrowers to fulfil their financial goals in life.
The Hanley, based in the Staffordshire town it is named for, has a vibrant and proactive workforce. Over the past year, all head office staff were able to work remotely but those based in branches were classed as key workers and continued to go in. All measures were taken to keep everyone Covid-secure.
The 2020 AGM, which was attended virtually, heard that over the past three years The Hanley balance sheet grew by 23%. In addition, it achieved all-time records for lending and savings balances. Attendees were also informed that the society had won a second consecutive place on the 100 Best Small Companies to Work For list – making this new listing its third year running.
The Hanley sponsors the Potters 'Arf Marathon, which was cancelled in 2020. Plans are underway for 2021, however. In the 12 months to August 31, it gave £42,907.68 to its partner charities – with £38,778.11 made up by the society itself. These include Dougie Mac (the Douglas MacMillan Hospice) and Glow, which supports people at risk of domestic abuse.
The society also made a donation of £1,600 to provide local children with food who would normally receive free school meals. Its nominated good causes receive ongoing interest from The Hanley's Charity Saver Accounts.
My manager cares about how satisfied I am in my job
Team leaders at the Hanley are measured against the six characteristics the society believes define good people management: to engage, motivate, develop, empower, coach and drive. Manager – and staff – behaviour is rated during the annual appraisal process that links into performance-related pay reviews.
I love working for this organisation
The Hanley, which enjoys a low rate of staff turnover, says it is small enough to ensure everyone is treated as individuals, equally and without discrimination. It utilises blind recruitment, which eliminates personal identification details, but this year nonetheless refocused to start attracting future candidates from more diverse backgrounds.
This job is good for my own personal growth
Employees have individual development plans that are reviewed on a regular basis to ensure the relevant training and support is provided. The society assesses high potential by way of an in-house High Potential Trait Indicator tool, and it has succession plans in place as people move up the ladder.
