To improve the working lives of its staff, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has made changes to the way it operates, based on feedback from them.
The professional, educational and trade union body for the UK's 63,000 chartered physiotherapists, physiotherapy students and support workers has introduced a coaching programme for senior managers. Its aim is to support them to move up to the next level and become leaders, and enable managers who report to them to connect better with their teams. This approach is being rolled down through the management layers.
Monthly all-staff meetings are a new feature and an online community on the social networking tool Yammer connects people with each other and the society's values.
An employment engagement officer has been appointed to ensure that all employees are included, well informed and have a voice in the future direction of the organisation.
To make performance review more accessible, annual appraisals have been dropped for more regular measurement by managers, whose own performance is judged against behaviour, objectives achieved by their teams and the wider success of the society's strategic goals.
With a pedigree stretching back more than 120 years, the organisation aims to lead, promote and represent the profession by driving excellence in physiotherapy practice and employment through its core values of taking responsibility, behaving ethically, delivering an effective service and achieving excellence and in influencing healthcare policy across the UK.
