Among those helped by The Charity for Civil Servants is Aiden who works with the Department of Work and Pensions. He needed therapy after a homophobic attack. The therapy helped, but the cost of sessions was financially crippling. The Charity stepped in and paid the fees.
"I didn't feel deserving of the support at the time, but I am so glad I pushed past those feelings. The person I spoke to from the Charity was kind and respectful of my situation," he says.
"She helped me with the application and I was ecstatic to find out it was a success. It was very emotional to be granted financial support for something so important to me and I will always be grateful for that."
Apart from providing financial support, the Charity advises civil servants and their families. It also gives back to the wider community. For the past year, it has partnered with Whizz-kidz, which promotes workplace access for young adults who use a wheelchair. One work placement has been completed and a second is underway.
The Civil Service Benevolent Fund was established in 1886 to support the widows and orphans of civil servants. It was set up on a mutual model, but in 1947 it opened up to civil servants in need and their dependents, irrespective of contribution. In 2012, it became The Charity for Civil Servants.
Its vision is to be a lifelong community in which people support each other when life takes a turn for the worse.
