Stephens Scown is a high profile West Country law firm. The firm has in excess of 300 staff with over 50 Partners across three offices in Exeter, Truro and St Austell.
Founded in 1938 in St Austell, it has grown from being a local firm specialising in criminal and property law into the full service firm it is today.
A dedicated management team and great staff with national expertise provide all the benefits of a big city rival but with a regional focus.
The people are the heart of this employee-owned business and many partners were once trainees themselves.
Employee wellbeing focuses on ensuring that individuals feel respected, trusted and valued and feel proud to work for Stephens Scown.
With a shift to home working during the pandemic, every employee was called monthly by HR, providing support and guidance on any worries or concerns.
Emails and videos from the managing partner have kept staff updated on what is happening in the business, as well as providing updates on Covid, information about wellbeing initiatives and a helping of fun.
Other initiatives include counselling workshops, weekly catch-up forums for working parents and those living alone, e-postcards to say ‘hello' or ‘happy Friday' and, as Covid fatigue set in, deliveries of cream teas and boxes of chocolates.
Stephens Scown has featured in the 100 Best Companies to Work For List for the last six years and is also consistently ranked highly in the UK's top two independent legal guides, Chambers and Legal 500.

Employees can take up to three paid days a year for voluntary work. This was extended to up to two hours a week during the pandemic to allow them to volunteer in their local community. The company does pro bono legal work and raised over £30,000 for charity this year.
