Splash Damage produces team-based multi-player games that create friendships and healthy competition. The same culture can be found in the headquarters of the company, which started with three friends coding in a bedroom.
The London-based video games developer now has 300 “Splashers”, but it has worked to maintain the values of its formative years in the early 2000s.
Charity work is an important part of the Splash ethos. Special Effect is a fundraising favourite. It uses video games and technology to enhance the quality of life of children and adults with disabilities. The company, which has created AAA experiences for acclaimed franchises such as Enemy Territory and Gears of War, donated all vending machine profits to the charity.
Splash's drive to improve diversity and inclusion has been accompanied by support for related charities, such as Mermaids. The broad range of good causes supported also includes the Rainforest Alliance, Beyond Autism, the British Heart Foundation, Toilet Twinning and a local women's refuge.
Charity and social events played a big part in keeping staff connected while they were working remotely. The leadership team gave daily updates after lockdown started.
Weekly video messages feature the chief executive, news about the business, showcases of colleagues' work and introductions to new joiners, who also get a welcome tea. Leaders hold monthly Q&A sessions and tap workers' views anonymously through regular Winningtemp surveys.

Splash Damage ditched canned and bottled drinks in favour of drinks dispensers as part of its efforts to be kinder to the environment. This simple change saved more than 21,000 cans and bottles in the first three months alone. Recycling is encouraged as much as possible, including coffee grounds.
