During the pandemic to remind staff working remotely that they were part of something bigger, Sky Betting & Gaming introduced a weekly virtual game of “Wheel of Fortune” to bring “Good Vibes to the Tribes”.
Every week staff were invited onto a live call during which five names were chosen at random to spin the Wheel with prizes ranging from supermarket vouchers to £500 holiday vouchers.
The technology and digital company, the UK's leading mobile-led betting game operator, has doubled in size over the last five years, employing more than 1,400 people in its head office in Leeds and offices in London, Sheffield and Solihull.
SB&G prides itself on being a transparent and collaborative business and keeps staff in the loop and involved through weekly business updates and a fortnightly Ask Leadership open Q&A session. During the pandemic the senior management team also took part in An Honest Conversation panel event series in which they discussed the tricky balancing act of juggling home-schooling and working in a senior role and the pressures of leading a team remotely.
They also introduced Wellbeing Afternoons (half a day off each month) and an “always-on lunch hour” between 12-1pm to encourage staff to take time away from their desks. Staff also took part in Positive Pods, short podcasts on a variety of topics from finding a good routine to staying positive.
To reflect its highly collaborative culture the firm also introduced interactive skills-based presentation and communication workshops and a virtual webinar series.
I have confidence in the leadership skills of the senior management team
The senior management team launched their Inclusion Pledge and initiatives including a quarterly inclusion survey. A Leadership Mentoring Scheme has also been introduced. This scheme invites applications from everyone, however, it particularly encourages them from employees from underrepresented groups and those who struggle to be heard or who think differently.

SB&G has created a central budget for peer-to-peer recognition, in the form of “Now That” rewards. Staff can recognise their colleagues in the moment with a personalised “Now That” reward of up to £50 with staff sending e-vouchers and deliveries to their colleagues throughout the pandemic.
This organisation has a strong social conscience
During 2020 staff raised more than £45,000 for charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support through virtual fundraising including a day-long Coffee Morning, with escape rooms, bake-alongs, live quizzes and online bingo. Employees did skills based volunteering throughout the pandemic working with social enterprises and charities.
