The Plaice to Talk is the staff forum at Seafish, a public body set up to improve improve efficiency and standards in the seafood industry. The forum provides a means for workers to learn about projects. It was launched after staff said they wanted to be told earlier about changes and to be involved in them.
Seafish is a non-departmental public body set up by the 1981 Fisheries Act. It works with people from the seafood sector — from fishermen and processors, to importers, retailers and food service providers — to help them to overcome challenges and seize opportunities.
The work it does keeps fishermen safe, supports sustainable sourcing, helps businesses work efficiently and promotes seafood as part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Supporting such a large industry that’s constantly changing, Seafish staff have to be ready for every challenge that comes their way: tackling everything from research to campaigns, insights to training.
The organisation says no two days are ever the same, and it’s this changeability that makes it an exciting organisation to work for.
The Seafish mission — to give the UK seafood sector the support it needs to thrive — drives everything it does. The recent introduction of a "results-only work environment" has seen staff experience a huge culture shift. The decision to move away from the traditional workplace environment was agreed upon after listening to the needs and priorities of staff. Seafish is now an organisation that focuses on output, rather than hours.
