Realism balanced with optimism was the key to PeoplePlus's employee strategy during the pandemic. Managing director Simon Rouse encouraged his UK-wide team to focus on the future and trust in one another.
PeoplePlus began life in 1986 in Nottingham. Today the company has 1,300 staff who run a number of front-line services for the government, including employment support, skills training, apprenticeships, independent living and prison education. They also provide recruitment, training and development and wellbeing services for employers.
To ensure its own staff remained engaged during the pandemic, PeoplePlus launched a new engagement and communication strategy with three main themes: Stay Supported, Stay Recognised and Stay Connected. For colleagues placed on furlough, there were specific communications every Friday and a mini on-site induction when they returned to their offices.
The week-long Power Up Festival brought staff together and focused on re-energising the whole team to ensure PeoplePlus was ready to play a vital part in the national recovery post-Covid. During the festival, the managing director announced a range of flexible working options, including shorter working weeks, for employees wanting a greater work/life balance.
An MS Teams site was set up to offer resources and support for parents juggling work and home-schooling. An HR chatbox offered 24/7 support for line managers.
The recently launched Additions platform includes a Wall of Recognition where staff can celebrate, thank and recognise colleagues across the business.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
The monthly Simply the Best awards honour staff who have demonstrated PeoplePlus's three trademarks – True North, Own It, Improve to be the Best. Winners receive a financial award and an invitation to the annual awards evening at Warwick Castle.
The experience I gain from this job is valuable for my future
PeoplePlus has launched an internal management development programme, called Improve to be the Best, for every line manager. The four-week programme is focused on employee engagement and the service-profit chain. The company also offers a range of internal apprenticeships leading to recognised management qualifications.
My organisation encourages charitable activities
PeoplePlus has a long-running partnership with the Prince's Trust, which includes staff donating the pence from their salaries to the charity via the Pennies From Heaven scheme. Also, employees receive a paid day off for volunteering, which many used last year to offer pandemic-related help to charities and local people.
