Making life peachy is the common purpose of Peach Pub Company, a nineteen-strong chain of gastro pubs located in market towns and villages across the heart of England. Founded in 2002 by Lee Cash and Hamish Stoddart with their first pub, The Rose & Crown in Warwick, the chain's success has been built on teamwork and continuous development.
The founders believe in progressing Peach people and supporting those who want to rise through the ranks, or who even plan to start their own hospitality business in the future. Hosting each service as if it was their own dinner party is a driving force for pub employees, and Peach fosters a close-knit family feel among teams – who all get Christmas Day off to spend with their own nearest and dearest.
When the first lockdown forced Peach Pub Company chefs to down tools and close their kitchens, the firm acted fast to keep teams and their suppliers busy and with a purpose, pivoting from serving guests their gastro pub fare to delivering an entirely new social enterprise, YourHub. Peach began serving communities in a new way, by making food that was missing from shops and takeaways and by becoming a cooking hub for the NHS, homeless charities and care homes.
The eateries sold classic dishes as takeaways and created at-home dining boxes for online order while 56 volunteers cooked, served and delivered meals to frontline health workers and those in need. YourHub operated for 80 days, during which time volunteer chefs made 10,750 and 1,000 local online orders were processed.
I love working for this organisation
The past year has brought new ways of working in a pub over and again, with changes implemented fast – from social distancing tables to how to serve ketchup. Peach added cleaners to pub rotas to keep up with new sanitising measures, sourced washable face masks and provided a strong pack of communication tools to help staff deal with challenging guests when The Rule of Six and Tier system came in.
This job is good for my own personal growth
A structured in-house training programme complements external courses such as Wine and Spirit Education Trust qualifications. On Peach Adventure Days teams head to big cities such as Manchester and London to soak up the restaurant and bar scenes and gain inspiration for Peach venues.
This organisation has a strong social conscience
Most Peach pubs have continued to make meals for homeless people, including turning the pumpkins that would have been used to celebrate Halloween into soup and pasta for them. Some venues have used their facilities for charity or to help local needs in other ways and around 70% of employees have volunteered at some stage during the pandemic.
