Online stationary retailer Papier invites customers to "uncover the endless possibilities of a blank page" with inspirational and personalised notebooks, notecards and diaries.
Known for its collaborations with artists, iconic brands and fashion labels, the business, with offices in London and New York, "wants to help create creative moments" for its employees too.
Papier appreciates that for its 'paps' to be creative, they need space to breathe. Everyone gets an hour a week to spend as they please, whether that's walking, reading or yoga.
In addition, its creative team get a 'blank page day' once a quarter, which they're encouraged to spend in nature, doing arts and crafts or writing in a bid to find fresh inspiration – something that's challenging when they're under pressure for product launches and other deadlines.
And more than 50% of the team have taken advantage of the freedom to work from anywhere for 20 days of the year. The policy supports employees' work-life balance and lets them see friends and family in another country without taking all their leave.
And the wellbeing benefits continue. Everyone gets a monthly allowance to put towards activities that support their mental and physical wellbeing. And following feedback from staff about the importance of understanding their finances, they now get four calls a year with a financial coach to set and review goals and unlimited messaging support.
My team is fun to work with
July 2023 saw the first NYLON Week, with the US team coming over for the summer party and a week of in-person collaboration. There are many smaller team-building initiatives too, likely weekly lunches with pop-up food stalls. And the Pride Employee Resource Group is the company's largest, with LGBTQIA+ members sharing experiences and organising events.
I am paid fairly for the work I do relative to people in similar positions in similar organisations
'The Golden Pen' is the company's weekly recognition award – an opportunity for teammates to celebrate each other's work. During the Monday meeting, the 'pen' is awarded by the previous holder, with the CEO giving the winner a shoutout. All winners from the previous four weeks get a voucher prize in the monthly meeting.
My organisation encourages charitable activities
'Papier with Purpose' is the company's CSR programme encouraging employees to give back to the local community through paid-for volunteering days, as well as being charitable and mindful of environmental impact. Initiatives include mentoring young people to help them into the creative industries, donating excess stock and giving a proportion of card sales to charity.
