IT ISN'T ONLY the students who learn at Newham College of Further Education — teachers and support staff say the job is good for their personal growth, too, which earns the college a top 35 ranking position among all 75 public sector organisations in this list. The college gives employees 35 hours of training a year, at a cost of about £600 each. Subjects range from office skills and time management to challenging behaviour and diversity. The 553-strong workforce says training is of great benefit (66%, ranking sixth among mid-sized bodies). They only have to look to the senior management team for examples of career progression, with 10 people having worked their way up from other positions. Staff say the experience they gain from their job is valuable (73%). Employees are able to meet with the Principal at regular ‘meet the Principal' focus groups where people are given the opportunity to ask him direct questions on a range of topics. The Principal also welcomes feedback through e-mail or the college intranet system and ensures that all employees are kept well informed of any developments or changes through consultation meetings.
