The name Mindful Chef embodies all that the brand aspires to be: mindful of the suppliers it chooses, mindful of the healthy ingredients it uses and mindful of the brand's impact on the environment. The company has three core values: "mindful", "personal" and "unafraid".
It lives the first one by becoming the first recipe box company to go climate neutral, investing positively in the environment and committing to being net-zero carbon by 2030. It fulfilled the second by selling products to NHS staff at cost price — a 30% discount during the pandemic and giving them a permanent 15% discount. It proved it was unafraid by leading the way in family-friendly policies for staff and it offers six months' full pay to primary caregivers and six weeks to secondary care-givers.
The company, which was set up in 2015 by three Devon school friends, delivers tens of thousands of meals across the UK every week. In 2017, it partnered with the food charity One Feeds Two. For each meal sold, Mindful Chef donates one school meal to a child living in poverty. With more than six million meals donated to date, Mindful Chef is a pioneer of the “one for one” charity model.
Mindful Chef boxes are gluten-free, dairy-free and contain no refined carbs. Providing a range of options to suit different lifestyles, it offers one-, two- and four-person boxes and caters for vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians and meat eaters.
