Family Action is a charity committed to building stronger families and brighter lives. It believes a family’s life chances should not be determined by circumstance, so it provides innovative and effective services and support to over 60,000 of the UK‘s most vulnerable families through a network of national programmes, financial grants and some 200 community-based services.
Its staff are passionate about making a difference in peoples’ lives. At the heart of the organisation are values that are embedded in all that it does. These are celebrated in the staff recognition awards twice a year, alongside the organisation’s annual appraisal process and regular supervision meetings.
The values also underpin the importance Family Action places on inclusion and staff wellbeing. It has active staff networks, which are supported centrally to play an active role in the organisation.
Family Action also actively supports the physical, mental, and financial wellbeing of staff. Employees can request flexible working from day one and many staff do work flexibly, whether through part-time hours, working remotely or in a hybrid working structure.
The organisation also implemented a one-off cost of living payment to employees in addition to the normal incremental pay increases for employees and annual cost of living increase. It also introduced additional financial support for colleagues struggling the most, in the form of a £150 supermarket voucher. Furthermore, Family Action ran a financial wellbeing month last year, with a number of online sessions and resources made available to colleagues.
People in my team go out of their way to help me
Teams come together regularly in person and virtually across the country. Whether it's lunch and learn sessions or staff networks hosting celebration events. Last Summer, as part of the organisation’s 'Creating Happy Memories Campaign', teams were given the afternoon off to hold a picnic and bring their children.
This organisation is run on strong values / principles
New employees attend an induction which the CEO always attends. He makes sure all new colleagues understand the organisation’s rich history, purpose, values, and strategy. Once a month it also holds an ‘open’ Executive team meeting, where all colleagues can join to hear the latest updates from the CEO and Directors.
This organisation is keen to help people from disadvantaged backgrounds
Family Action has 43 FOOD Clubs across the country. FOOD Clubs work with local partners to source food that would otherwise go to landfill. The use of partner organisations to source food and reach local communities means that the organisation is helping to improving economic and social wellbeing.
