Cornish Bakery exists to nourish customers in towns and villages across the UK with award-winning pasties, cakes, and beyond-Fairtrade ethical coffees. Born in 1994 in Mevagissey, Cornwall, Cornish Bakery is now one of the UK’s fastest growing bakery companies with over 50 locations throughout the country.
Founder Steve Grocutt began the organisation as an independent bakery which put a contemporary twist on the classic Cornish pasty. Experimenting with new flavours, Steve’s pasties were hugely popular resulting in a dramatic increase in demand and the opportunity for the expansion of the organisation.
Cornish Bakery is committed to “nourishing” its employees and empowering them to make “decisions in the bakeries, and not the boardroom”.
The organisation introduced the RISE and SHINE programmes to support its employees with their career progression. The first SHINE programme consisted of 10 female Assistant Bakery Managers and, following the programme, seven of these have already been promoted to Bakery Manager level.
Three of these new managers are now working with the Finance Director to implement a more user-friendly, cost-efficient labour reporting system which was proposed in their personal development project. This is an example of Cornish Bakery’s “decisions in the bakery, and not in the boardroom” vision, coupled with the RISE and SHINE personal development programmes, working to optimum effect.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
Cornish Bakery runs a Mental Health First Aiders course for all of its teams. Every new employee completes a level one MHFA as part of their induction. Additionally, the organisation has created the Hardship Fund to help its employees with the cost-of-living crisis by enabling them to lend money from the business interest free.
My team is fun to work with
Every year, the organisation takes its teams away for a night and two days of fun, camaraderie, and competition. Employees participate in fun activities, enjoy excellent entertainment and food, and stay in 5-star accommodation. There is also an awards ceremony that celebrates the teams’ successes and colleagues leave feeling rewarded, bonded, and motivated.
This organisation has a strong social conscience
With 50 bakeries across the country, Cornish Bakery encourages each bakery to fundraise independently for local charities. In 2022, employees walked 20 miles in Cornish pasty outfits, created village-wide treasure hunts, cycled over 185 miles, sky dived, and shaved their heads to raise money. The organisation’s bakeries also donate leftover food to foodbanks every day.
