FOR STAFF, WORKING at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) NHS Foundation Trust is about providing great patient care and getting support, development and job satisfaction in return. The trust is delivering on all counts with workers, registering high engagement levels in our staff survey. Responsible for Addenbrooke's and the Rosie hospitals, the trust ranks first among big organisations on our list for 11 out of 70 questions and leads the way on staff development. Employees find work stimulating (75% positive), good for their own personal growth (73%) and believe they can make a difference within the organisation (71%). Keen to support its workforce in both their personal and professional development, the trust values vocational learning as much as academic knowledge. There are extensive opportunities in-house and through external bodies to gain not only clinical skills training, such as resuscitation, but also in areas from IT and management to communication and conflict resolution. Staff say the training is of benefit to them (62%) and, with 43 senior managers promoted internally, there are plenty of chances to learn and grow (58%). In addition to providing local services, CUH is a centre for specialist care and a world-class teaching hospital, so it follows that employees care about providing a great service (94%) and think that the trust delivers on this (77%). Staff at the Trust, which wins our Giving Something Back special award, believe it makes a positive difference to the world (73%) and are proud to work for CUH (75%). The average salary of a nurse is just over £23,000 and a comprehensive range of staff benefits include a final salary pension, an on-site nursery, in-house accommodation, a free employee assistance programme, the opportunity to purchase extra holidays, and a leisure and fitness centre. As part of its Addenbrooke's Life initiative, the trust has introduced a health and wellbeing programme. Some 45% of the 7,581-strong workforce has put in at least five years' service. They have fun with their colleagues (74%) and also get a buzz out of working with them (62%). www.cuh.org.uk
My work is an important part of my life
As part of the Addenbrooke's Life initiative, they have introduced a nationally recognised health and wellbeing programme where staff social events play a large role. This is possible as they get sponsored for many of their larger events. Things like their staff painting and poetry competition really take no cost at all, just time. Team building can take a variety of forms, some is conducted and organised at local level. Others prefer a more structured and formal approach. It is seen as important that teams decide themselves which approach is most suited to their own needs.
