Bridgend College opened its high-tech Steam Academy last year in a new building designed to accommodate teaching, learning and support facilities for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
The further education college in south Wales supports more than 6,000 students and employs over 700 members of staff across its four campuses in Cowbridge Road and Queens Road, in Bridgend, and Pencoed, and Maesteg.
It offers an extensive range of courses, from entry level to degree level, in more than 20 vocational areas. More than half of learners live in some of the most socially deprived wards in Wales and its mission is to enable and inspire every learner to "be all that you can be".
To makes sure its staff can "be all that they can be", the college stages five professional development days each year, which are themed across various strands of its strategic plan. As part of Bridgend College's wellbeing package, one of the development days focuses on resilience.
Bridgend College also has an employee assistance programme that provides advice by telephone and online on a wide range of subjects, from financial wellbeing to help with careers, as well as a 24-hour telephone counselling service.
It also runs focus groups on the topic of workload to give staff a safe space to share their concerns. The initiative has already led to the college drawing up an action plan to address issues that have arisen and given it insight into how it can improve.
