Amplyfi harnessed the tech skills it usually dedicates to providing fast, accurate business intelligence to help counteract the flood of misinformation about Covid-19.
The company tasked a team of its developers with creating the Coronavirus Gateway, a free portal using only data from highly trusted public health and government sources, which was aimed at medical professionals and the public.
Cardiff-based Amplyfi was launched in 2015 by Chris Ganje and Ian Jones, who while strategists at the oil giant BP had struggled to extract meaningful insight from the flood of data and opinions open to all on the internet.
They and their team created the world's first Insights Automation Platform, which uses machine learning and data science to analyse millions of documents a day. This mining of deep-web data sources has attracted blue-chip clients and millions of pounds of venture capital backing.
Amplyfi is keen to be an innovative employer, too. It has assessed the Myers-Briggs personality profile of its 40-plus PhDs, engineers and other team members. Also, as “we're a tech company and most of us love sci-fi”, Amplyfi has matched their profiles with Star Wars figures for a bit more fun. “We have lots of Jar Jar Binks!”
This has enabled Amplyfi to tailor its communication channels. Having a large majority of introverted personalities, it has found that Slack is perfect for engagement. For staff who are more extroverted, it has introduced a video platform called Zing for social interactions after work.
