Williams, established in 1972, has grown from a single branch to an impressive 53 branches across the South and Central UK by 2024. Its vision is to be the best plumber's merchant in the UK for self-employed tradespeople employing up to five staff, and to be the best employer in its sector. The organisation puts people before profit, treating colleagues fairly, supporting them when needed, and providing necessary training and resources.
In November 2022, Williams brought forward the annual pay review to support employees during the cost-of-living crisis. It also partnered with Rainy Day Trust, providing further financial wellbeing support, education, and grants to all employees. The organisation also facilitates financial literacy webinars, helping employees manage their finances.
Williams' commitment to employees' wellbeing extends beyond financial support. It provides free legal, counselling, mental health, and housing advice in partnership with the Rainy Day Trust. It also encourages employees to train as Mental Health First Aiders, having 13 qualified individuals to date.
Innovation and continuous improvement are encouraged at Williams. The Business Improvement Group (BIG) was set up to allow colleagues to share ideas on enhancing the workplace. The Williams Academy, overhauled in 2021, focuses on upskilling and developing Line Managers and Assistant Managers, leading to a rise in the number of promotions.
Williams fosters open communication, with the Senior Leadership Team presenting organisation-wide updates, and a new working group formed to encourage collaborative working across different departments.
