Uppingham School, founded in 1584, is one of the leading British boarding schools for boys and girls. Of the school's roll of 395, all but ten are boarders, making it a true boarding school. Headmaster Dr Richard Maloney presides over a school renowned for music and the performing arts. But there's now a strong sporting tradition, too, enhanced by having the greatest area of playing fields of any school in England and by the new sports centre opened by Lord Coe. Uppingham has a sense of camaraderie and pupils respect each other's achievements, whether it be with a cello or cricket bat. All the academic staff are involved as tutors in houses, so the needs of boarders are appreciated and understood all round. A superb team of people in each house nurtures confidence, encourages academic curiosity and sets challenges. This leads to higher expectations and greater achievement.
