As the freehold owner of 92 acres of prime property in Marylebone, central London, The Howard de Walden Estate was quick to step in to support the most vulnerable in its community when the coronavirus pandemic struck.
The property company's links to the area, covering Marylebone Village and the Harley Street Medical Area, date back to about 1710 and its remit goes far beyond most landlords: it is committed to sustaining the vibrant character of Marylebone, and Harley Street's world-class reputation for medical excellence.
Employees manage the stewardship of everything residents, workers or visitors could possibly need in the area: homes, businesses, shops, restaurants, schools, cultural institutions, places of worship, health clubs, medical practices and public spaces.
Early in the Covid-19 crisis, the estate provided funding to food banks, homeless shelters and services for the elderly. It also supported Marylebone's schools, music venues and charities, not only with donations but by campaigning to raise awareness for their cause. Employees are encouraged to play a part in the community they serve by volunteering and supporting local events as well as building strong relationships through their daily work.
All sections of the business work collaboratively to make residents, businesses and visitors feel part of this diverse community. Senior leaders set up fortnightly hub calls where all staff are invited to log in to hear business updates and share light-hearted stories. Managers make a special effort to keep in touch with staff members living alone.
