St Giles Trust is a charity built on empathy, support and ambition for the people it supports. And it takes the same approach to its employees – many of whom have overcome severe disadvantages themselves.
The London-based charity helps vulnerable people find jobs, homes and support and become positive contributors to society, whether that's young people at risk of criminal exploitation or women suffering domestic abuse.
Operating in many regions in England and across Wales, it uses its expertise and the real-life past experiences of its employees to help them turn their lives around.
St Giles Trust considers its staff its "greatest asset", valuing and appreciating their work for clients. And this is reflected in the support they receive at work. There's generous annual leave, additional 'duvet days' and paid care leave days for sick children or relatives. There's also unlimited access to clinical therapists and in-house mental health support.
And cost-of-living challenges have been recognised too, with an across-the-board one-off pay increase and additional payouts to staff on salaries at the lower ends of the scale. And to avoid staff getting stung by high-interest loans, there's a hardship fund for help with any unexpected bills.
There are plenty of opportunities to get together at St Giles Trust, from regular lunch and learns to the annual staff conference celebrating achievements and providing a great networking forum for colleagues from across the country. And team building activities – such as old school sports days – are less about work and more about fun!
I feel proud to work for this organisation
There are central inductions for new starters, held quarterly. It's a chance for them to get to know each other and learn more about the charity, its values, processes and projects through group exercises and an intro from the senior leadership team. New recruits also get a 'buddy' to help them have a smooth start.
The experience I gain from this job is valuable for my future
A performance management framework guides learning and development needs. A dedicated skills centre with an extensive training catalogue provides a range of learning activities to uphold the values and gives front-line staff and managers chance to grow and develop through job-specific training. There's also accredited management and leadership training on offer.
This organisation is keen to help people from disadvantaged backgrounds
The Charity is giving by its nature. The St Giles Pantry food hubs offer more than a meal to those struggling to feed themselves. Hundreds of households are supported every year with face-to-face support to overcome barriers. As part of its Christmas Appeal, St Giles Trust pledged to provide 50,000 meals to families.
