"Some of the country's most compassionate and dedicated people who step forward to help make society better and more inclusive," that's how the Royal Voluntary Service and its employees describe who they are and what they do.

With more than 600 staff and thousands of volunteers, the Royal Voluntary Service is the largest and one of the oldest volunteering charities in Great Britain. It first set out to recruit women volunteers to assist during and after air raids, and almost 90 years later, it's supporting communities, vulnerable people, and the NHS.

The charity's focus on care extends to its own team. Recognising that many are juggling caring responsibilities or facing other challenges outside of work, it offers flexible working patterns where it can, including part-time work and job shares. As a virtual organisation, some non-front-line staff can work from home permanently.

The charity is geared up to support anyone facing mental health challenges. It has a team of Mental Health First Aiders and has invested in training from the Samaritans focused on conversing with vulnerable individuals. A national workshop for managers, alongside e-learning and toolkits, has helped them better recognise the signs and symptoms of poor mental health in their employees and volunteers.

Royal Voluntary Service was founded in 1938 to facilitate people to volunteer so that they could help at a time of enormous need in Britain. For the first 7 years of its history, that need was the war effort, but over the following decades, Royal Voluntary Service has adapted to help tackle the most pressing needs of the day. Today, supporting the NHS and wider social care needs is where Royal Voluntary Service can make the most difference, inspiring and enabling people to volunteer to play their part in supporting their community. Our founder, Stella, Lady Reading, described voluntary service as “the gift of a thoughtful person of their skills, their energy and their time.” Volunteering is Royal Voluntary Service’s business and everyone who works for RVS has a part to play in enabling and supporting people to volunteer. Stella, Lady Reading, also said "As a nation we require voluntary service today as much as we have ever done in the past.” In the last 50 years, if not longer, this sentiment has never been truer. We are facing challenges not witnessed before in most people’s lives and these are the times when charities come to the fore and have the most impact. It is our responsibility to help those most in need through the power of voluntary service. Royal Voluntary Service, like most organisations, is being asked to do more with less. We are also working to become a more inclusive organisation, to play our part in tackling climate change, to deliver services digitally and make greater use of new technologies to become more effective and more efficient with our limited resources. As an employer, we recognise that we need to build a flexible, agile, skilled, and committed workforce, which can support and empower people across Britain to volunteer. We also need to ensure we keep people safe, so our management of health and safety and safeguarding remains paramount. Our new People Plan outlines how we will continue to meet the needs of the day through committed.
