"Some of the country's most compassionate and dedicated people who step forward to help make society better and more inclusive," that's how the Royal Voluntary Service and its employees describe who they are and what they do.
With more than 600 staff and thousands of volunteers, the Royal Voluntary Service is the largest and one of the oldest volunteering charities in Great Britain. It first set out to recruit women volunteers to assist during and after air raids, and almost 90 years later, it's supporting communities, vulnerable people, and the NHS.
The charity's focus on care extends to its own team. Recognising that many are juggling caring responsibilities or facing other challenges outside of work, it offers flexible working patterns where it can, including part-time work and job shares. As a virtual organisation, some non-front-line staff can work from home permanently.
The charity is geared up to support anyone facing mental health challenges. It has a team of Mental Health First Aiders and has invested in training from the Samaritans focused on conversing with vulnerable individuals. A national workshop for managers, alongside e-learning and toolkits, has helped them better recognise the signs and symptoms of poor mental health in their employees and volunteers.

This job is good for my own personal growth
All employees get dedicated time with their line manager for two annual performance development reviews. All staff have access to online learning, and the organisation is undertaking a learning needs analysis to capture CPD for each directorate and any informal coaching needs. It also plans to introduce an accredited management development programme.
