There is more than one bottom line at digital, renewable energy supplier Pure Planet – in fact there are three: people, planet and profit. The clean energy startup founded in 2017 is as passionate about its purpose of powering Britain by renewable energy, affordable and available to all as it is about profit.
Staff share the motivation to make the world a better, more sustainable place and the Bath-based company fosters a positive, vibrant culture unencumbered by too much structure and based on trust – as proven by the unlimited holiday allowance policy: “If we hire you, we trust you”, Pure Planet says.
The three founders and leaders Steven Day, Andrew Ralston and Chris Alliott came from telecoms and finance backgrounds and set out to create an environment that was inspiring, motivating and meaningful with their own company. Maintaining a feeling of belonging over lockdown has involved swapping the company's vegan buffet lunches and cakes for home delivery alternatives, and on Wednesday mornings all employees are matched randomly with a colleague to have a virtual coffee with that day.
In their fortnightly company-wide virtual team meetings the leaders have talked about their own struggles during lockdown, and the importance of wellbeing and flexing hours to fit with personal circumstances. As restrictions ease staff are being offered the option of working from the office or remotely.
I feel proud to work for this organisation
Pure Planet provided full IT kit for those who needed it during lockdown, and even paid for desks in some cases. Once the initial lockdown lifted 10% of employees could come into the office, under safe social distancing guidelines, if they wanted a change of scenery or peace away from flatmates or family. Everyone gets the same parental leave and pay – regardless of gender, identity or sexual orientation, or whichever way they become a parent.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
Along with an employee assistance programme and trained mental health first aiders Pure Planet has a Slack channel focused purely on mental, physical and financial wellbeing. Resilience-building videos by an external trainer and free remote yoga sessions have been offered company-wide. 80% of staff took part in a virtual walk from London to Lapland, adding their steps daily to a calculating app.
This organisation has a strong social conscience
Pure Planet pays to carbon offset the commute of all employees – a policy that has remained in spite of the transition to remote working since March 2020. Company benefits are environmentally friendly, such a cycle-to-work scheme that includes e-bikes, a green car leasing scheme that supplies only electric vehicles and hybrids and an ethical pension fund.
