PJ Care is a leading and award-winning provider of specialist neurological care and neuro-rehab for people with progressive or acquired neurological conditions.
The company is a wonderful place to work; it has an inclusive environment to ensure that every single member of staff – whatever their role, whatever their life experience – gets the same opportunity.
The company was started in 2000 by Jan Flawn when she noticed a lack of services in neurological care for young adults who, at that time, were living inappropriately in care homes for the elderly.
Jan fought hard to get funding to build and equip the first centre because the banks did not consider her to be a good risk. Her determination proved them wrong and enabled her to build Bluebirds in 2001. The second and third centres were opened in Milton Keynes and Peterborough in 2012, respectively.
Jan’s son, Neil Russell, who has been with the company since 2001, managed the design of these innovative sites and in 2017 took over as Chairman when Jan retired.
Across the service, there are eight units with each one looking after people with conditions such as Huntington’s, different types of dementia, MS and Parkinson’s – a total of 183 residents who are looked after by nearly 600 staff.
The company has a diverse workforce all coming together to provide residents with the best possible care.
This organisation is run on strong values / principles
Care, compassion, and commitment are the values that the senior management team tries to instil into every employee at PJ Care. They all support their individual teams but also work hard to build strong relationships with other teams across all areas of the business, whether that's the frontline staff or the support teams.
I am paid fairly for the work I do relative to people in similar positions in similar organisations
The average hourly rate for PJ Care’s staff for males was £12.35, and for females, it was £12.81, showing that gender has no bearing on pay. Almost all of the company’s registered managers and senior clinical staff are female, selected solely on merit, with development plans in place for all to achieve higher positions.
My organisation encourages charitable activities
Over the past 12 months, PJ Care has donated over £15,000 to charity. Members of staff participate in various events e.g. London to Brighton Cycle Ride, marathons, and half marathons. One member of staff lost her son to suicide so she and her family ran a virtual marathon during May, raising funds for Mind.
