A large bonus was in store for staff at law firm Mills & Reeve, last year, after turnover rose to a record £131.2 million. It allocated a bonus pool of £2.4 million, which meant anyone working full time for the whole financial year received £2,231.

Meanwhile, the cost-of-living crisis has resulted in the firm improving the help and advice it offers to staff. It has introduced financial awareness sessions and set up an employee hardship fund. Staff can apply for a non-repayable grant of up to £1,000. Mills & Reeve has also partnered with an independent mortgage broker to give free advice to employees.

The company, which has offices in Birmingham, Cambridge, Leeds, Manchester, Norwich and Oxford, strives to improve its services continually. Its strong culture of collaboration combines with the technology and resources to make change happen. As a result, it was named the 33rd most innovative law firm in Europe in the Financial Times’ Innovative Lawyers Europe list, thanks to its diversity and inclusion policies and high levels of client satisfaction.

As members of the Legal Sustainability Alliance, the firm has also consistently reduced its carbon emissions by working with employees and suppliers to implement improvements and initiatives, such as creating a travel smart programme to reduce non-essential business travel and using waste streaming to ensure no waste goes to landfill.

Ensuring that the firm is a great place to work has been fundamental to our collaborative culture and our success for many years. Being a leader in people experience forms a key part of our firm’s 2025 strategy. The wellbeing of our staff has been of even more importance since the Covid-19 pandemic hit. We have run many wellbeing sessions covering a wide variety of topics, set up a kids club to support employees home schooling and organised firm wide charity challenges aimed at encouraging staff to take time away from their desks.A key measure of our employee engagement is our own bi-annual all staff survey which we have been running for the past 20 years. It was great to see the results of our 2021 staff survey which showed strong and improving levels of staff engagement from an already high base. Ninety-seven per cent of our people would recommend us as a great place to work, an impressive score which has been maintained from the previous survey in 2019 despite the challenges of the pandemic. There is always more we can improve on and we take all staff feedback incredibly seriously which helps us to identify areas of focus and shape our strategy as we strive to be a leader in people experience and a firm where our people thrive and others want to join.
