In nine safe houses across Britain, the Medaille Trust provides refuge and freedom from modern slavery. It is one of the UK's largest providers of accommodation and round-the-clock support for victims.
It employs almost 120 people in the safe houses. They stage regular team meets that are often focused on food from different cultures. Residents of the safe houses are involved in cooking and eating the meals.
Staff also take trips out with residents to places such as the zoo, Kew Gardens and pick-your-own farms. These help to build teams and foster strong work relationships among staff and with clients.
The annual conference brings teams together. Last year's took place in Manchester and was given the theme of wellbeing. There were workshops in mindfulness and physical and mental health. Thanks to feedback from staff, the charity has boosted what it offers them. It raised its rates for expenses, set up a new benefits platform, gave staff an extra day off on their birthday, as well as a day to volunteer for a project to support their community, and launched a menopause cafe.
Senior leaders are passionate about the organisation's work and they make sure they demonstrate it. They work hard to collaborate in providing opportunities for staff to work together. Managers are invited to join regular senior management meetings to ensure two-way communication.

At the Mersey service, an area of wasteland has been turned into an allotment, where residents plant and grow vegetables. Gardening is known to be good for mental and physical wellbeing, so it benefits residents but, on top of that, excess produce is donated to the local food bank.
