Homeless Link is a membership charity supporting organisations that work directly with homeless people, from national charities to housing associations and small local groups.
Based in London, the charity's vision is a country free from homelessness, where everyone has a place to call home and the support they need to keep it.
And it's effecting change through various activities, from research and campaigning on policy to supporting its members through advocacy, training services and grant-giving.
It also runs an online case management system and Streetlink – a service that enables people to connect rough sleepers to the support they need to live off the streets.
And Homeless Link is flexible about where its almost 100 staff want to work. In 2021, all employees were given the option of working from home full-time if it suited them better. Today, around two-thirds are home-based. Not only does this support employees' work-life balance, but it's opened up the recruitment pool from London to the whole UK, helping the organisation feel closer to its members and creating a strengthened and diversified team.
Staff who work from home get an allowance and equipment costs. And systems and technologies – such as Slack and Zoom – ensure all staff, wherever they're based, feel included and up-to-date on corporate and personal news. And it's not all remote; teams meet every quarter, and events bring staff together three times a year.
I am paid fairly for the work that I do relative to others within this organisation
Each post has a clear salary and grading structure for transparency and to track career development. Each scale consists of five points. Appointments are usually made at the first point on the scale, and well-performing staff automatically move up a point every year – each with a two per cent pay increment.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
Everyone can participate in online yoga sessions, and an Employee Assistance programme provides online and in-person support to people facing personal issues outside the workplace. There's also a wellbeing' task and finish' group – an output from a staff conference exploring what would make Homeless Link a better place to work.
The experience I gain from this job is valuable for my future
Every team member has an annual Personal Development Plan. It's regularly discussed and reviewed, identifying strengths and learning and development opportunities. Meanwhile, all managers get training in processes and systems and insights into their styles. They also have access to external leadership development courses, coaching and mentoring.
