Founded in 1964, HLM works collaboratively across five studios in Sheffield, London, Glasgow, Belfast and Cardiff. The organisation offers a combination of design skills including architecture, landscape architecture and urban design, interior architecture, sustainable design and masterplanning.
The organisation is driven by its employees, believing that they are the very heart of the company. It’s culture of ‘One Team’ has been fundamental to its success and this strong belief in its people, helped the organisation transition into an Employee Owned Trust at the beginning of 2021.
One of the organisation’s values is transparency; ensuring it listens, hears ideas, and shapes solutions which respond to individual needs.
Its monthly live Director Q&A sessions share practice-wide information with everyone. With connected messaging and support, HLM has tried to relieve uncertainty and isolation, and celebrate individual success.
The HLM culture is one of openness and approachability where employees know there is someone at any level there to listen and support them and that managers are trained to be able to handle difficult conversations and lead with emotional intelligence.
Its company-wide mantra, ‘everything is connected’ underpins its culture. It encourages cross-sector, -studio and -discipline working, and its multi-skilled teams bring with them a diverse range of experiences. HLM’s culture is built on many layers of connectivity in-person, supported by virtual practice updates and studio meetings for any extra bulletins. Its bi-weekly newsletter is fed into by every studio, giving us the chance to celebrate and share news.

All managers have received mental health training and stress management training, enabling them to recognise the signs of stress and burnout. This additional level of support recognises that managers may require extra support for their teams and guidance on how to manage difficult conversations, while giving employees the opportunity to have confidential and supportive conversations.
My team is fun to work with
