Bosses at Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce aim to support their staff as much as they do the local businesses they serve. To that end managers have introduced dedicated time every month with each of their employees to discuss anything from work to personal life as the workforce get to grips with working remotely in a pandemic.
Additionally, monthly staff briefs from chief executive, Sharon Smith, include virtual networking time where colleagues split into breakout groups to connect with each other.
Founded nearly 200 years ago to support businesses in order to enhance the local economy, The Chamber provides a range of services to members who pay an annual fee to access the services and knowledge it has to offer. Based in Worcester with an office in Hereford, it is the eighth largest of 53 Chambers across the UK with more than 1,400 members including micro businesses, small, medium and multinational companies, with more than 50% employing fewer than 10 people.
Offering plenty of development opportunities, employees tend to work with a mixture of departments in their day-to-day roles, as well as being involved in helping with special events and giving their input into decisions.
The organisation believes that happy employees are committed employees and prides itself on its open, family-friendly culture which places a high price on wellbeing and regularly seeks feedback from its staff. HWCC recognised the commitment and hard work of staff with an early finish after the virtual Christmas party and a Christmas hamper.
The experience I gain from this job is valuable for my future
HWCC has continued to support professional development including degree apprenticeships. Managers have access to the training courses and webinars the Chamber has organised for external businesses which range from building resilience to managing mental health during the Coronavirus crisis and leading through change and uncertainty.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
Morale boosting activities included quizzes, origami making, a sunflower growing contest and the 12@12 initiative - 12 minutes of exercise at noon to encourage staff to get away from their desk. During the initial lockdown HWCC also introduced a Friday Pause at 4 to encourage employees to meditate.
My organisation encourages charitable activities
During the pandemic, HWCC has provided a day's paid leave for employees to take part in charity work. Fundraising events included a virtual Macmillan Coffee Morning and a short comedy festive video it made for a virtual carol service to raise money for the local food bank.
