Great Ormond Street Hospital was founded in 1852 and since its establishment it has been supported by a long history of philanthropy, which has driven its development from a ten-bedded ward to one of the world's leading paediatric research hospitals. The charity supports seriously ill children from across the UK cared for at GOSH. All employees are united behind a common vision; to create a better future for the seriously ill children at Great Ormond Street Hospital. It's emotive and engaging cause underpins the culture and translates into the charity having a very passionate working environment. There's an energetic, warm and friendly atmosphere grown from a strong sense that everyone is united in working towards a shared goal. The charity encourages a culture of peer reward and recognition where colleagues can choose to appreciate each other, rather than this being decided by senior management. As well as reward, volunteering is very important to the charity. All employees are invited to volunteer at every event, from the bi-annual GOSH gala, to patient Christmas parties.

Every day, 619 children and young people arrive at GOSH. Core principles of the charity are: respect, enterprising, collaborative, accountable and passionate. Staff can visit the hospital to see the mission in action and volunteer. Employees are also asked during appraisals how they have lived these values.

HR and managers complete a ‘training needs analysis' for each individual. Where staff express interest in opportunities beyond their team, the charity seeks out roles in projects, cross-charity groups and secondments for them. What's more, 30% of all roles last year were filled internally.
