Virtual scavenger hunts and quizzes have entertained staff at power systems technology specialist, Fundamentals. Weekly coffee morning sessions keep them updated on what is going on within the company and the spotlight is put on team members, who share information about themselves and their background.
Fundamentals, which is based in Swindon but has employees working across the UK and a subsidiary company in Australia, helps to improve the health and performance of the national grid. The family-owned business began in the mid 1990s when the founders were asked to solve a problem for Southern Electricity – how to operate and balance, in parallel, the two power transformers installed as standard in every high voltage substation.
They did it by breaking it down to the fundamentals, hence the company name, and in the process transformed voltage control for distribution networks. Fundamentals has also developed dedicated service teams to solve problems for all sectors of the electricity industry and works with a growing network of power technology experts and partners in Europe, Asia Pacific and the Gulf.
It aims to provide an open and happy working environment where loyalty is highly valued. To reward employees for their efforts, the company sets aside a bonus pot of 15% of net profit each year which is shared among the workforce once the end of year accounts have been completed.
