Children's services provider, Fair Ways, showed its commitment to looking after staff with the launch of its Be Your Best Self wellbeing programme. This included Friday fun activities for employees and their families, a book club, exercise classes and feel good hampers containing positivity messages, de-stress shower gel, bath salts and a pillow spray.
Fair Ways has a simple philosophy. It looks after its employees the best it can, so they look after service users the best they can.
The Portsmouth-based charity-owned organisation delivers services including residential social care, healthcare, fostering, outreach support, training and education to more than 150 children and young people in care each year. Its mission is to make a difference through passionate care and support and employees are expected to play their PART (professional, accepting, reflective, transparent).
The organisation's values are at the heart of everything it does and it measures its wealth by the difference it makes, rather than the profit it makes, all of which is reinvested in its services. Fair Ways works together with staff to build an institution that makes a difference to society and leaves a legacy greater than them.
The organisation has trained 27 mental health first aiders to support staff and at the start of the pandemic offered financial help to staff who were struggling. It showed staff its appreciation for their efforts at the virtual awards evening and by sending the team Christmas hampers.
My manager cares about me as an individual
Fair Ways believes the key to successful, motivated and engaged teams is having an inspiring and supportive leader. In addition to the management development training programme, which includes external training and coaching sessions, there are regular drop in masterclasses on topics from culture and supporting organisational change to coaching for managers.
My work is an important part of my life
During lockdown in place of the usual monthly staff lottery which has a £100 prize, Fair Ways introduced a quarterly lottery where employees can win a £1,000 for a holiday of their choice. Staff can also now choose how they would best like to work in the future.
My organisation encourages charitable activities
During the pandemic Fair Ways set up internal and external Help Squads to support vulnerable members of staff and the local community. Fair Ways staff helped colleagues or their families with shopping and picking up prescriptions and organised the donation of over 1,000 items to local food banks.
