Equinix is perhaps the biggest tech firm you've never heard of but it ensures that the services you use every single day live up to expectations. Founded in California in 1998, it operates in 63 markets across 26 countries and corporations rely on its internet connection and data centres that form the world's only global interconnection platform hosting crucial digital infrastructure.
What London-based Equinix (Nasdaq: EQIX) really sells is trust. In an increasingly interdependent digital economy and to secure services in a time of disruption, staff do whatever they can to help businesses develop.
Covid-19 has seen a large focus on employee wellbeing, with rules announced in September 2020 that included Better Way Days – that is, no meetings on Wednesdays! Equinix also honoured World Mental Health day by giving everyone two additional paid days off.
Operations employees who had to come in during lockdown got meals and Ubers to get to work and home safely. They all received a bonus for their critical input while corporate staff got financial help with home-working.
Company values, encapsulated as The Magic of Equinix, are built into annual performance reviews for everyone, including senior managers. This year WeAreEquinix was launched in the UK to bring diversity, inclusion and belonging to life at local level.
Equinix is involved in defining strategies that will transform its sector into utilising carbon-free power – something it had already achieved in the UK in 2019 when all its sites reached 100% renewable status. It is part of a group forming a climate-neutral, self-regulatory initiative across Europe.

Its EBX (Employee Business Exchange) forum enables nominated representatives to discuss strategies and ensure transparent, effective communication with employees.
My team is fun to work with
Staff interest groups quickly sprang up on Yammer with people sharing personal moments, fun photos, and, of course, communicating about the business. Zoom quizzes and virtual drinks continued hallway conversations. The MD hosts two coffee catch-ups a week with his team and encourages others to do the same.
This organisation has a strong social conscience
This year Equinix donated a total of £54,339 to 205 good causes. Food was gifted to The Chapel in Surrey, which went to 150 families; staff backed a joint project between St Mary's Church in Ash Vale and a local coronavirus support group; and raised nearly £1,500 in October's Race Against Hunger.
