This charity's mission is to increase the number and standard of professionally qualified managers. When it comes to its own managers and the rest of its team, the Chartered Management Institute seeks to lead from the front, always guided by its four values: being professional, progressive, passionate and practical.
CMI was founded in 1947 to help rebuild British industry in the wake of the Second World War. Today it has more than 143,000 members, including 90,000 learners who are studying for one of its qualifications and 10,500 chartered managers.
The institute offers a flexible work culture, development opportunities, including apprenticeships and mentoring, and employee recognition schemes. Regular short surveys are held, asking staff: “What else do you need that would help you?”
CMI's People's Choice award is held three times a year. Individuals or teams are nominated by colleagues, and the entire workforce – in Corby and London – votes for the outright winner. Rainbow Rewards, a scheme designed by a staff member, recognises individuals or teams that have gone the extra mile.
As part of its efforts to protect staff wellbeing, the leadership team introduced a walk and talk hour. All colleagues went for a walk at a fixed time, with no screens or emails allowed, though phone calls could be made. Quizzes and a book club continue to keep staff connected as they navigate new ways of working.
