"To give people the strength to face the everyday and the exceptional" is the mission of occupational charity caba.
Set up in 1886 to provide financial assistance to members of the Chartered accountant community who'd fallen on hard times, caba now offers a broad range of support to members of the ICAEW, their close family dependents and accountancy students.
Based in Rugby, its 60-strong team supports people through money worries and physical, mental, legal and career challenges so "everyone in the ICAEW community can fully participate in life."
And it does the same for its employees; they get free access to all the support the charity offers, which includes counselling and coaching. They also benefit from private healthcare.
Caba listens to its staff. Following feedback from the last survey, it introduced various initiatives, including a values and behaviours project and more learning and development opportunities. It has also hired a communications specialist to boost internal comms.
All employees now have access to LinkedIn Learning and undertake equality, diversity and inclusion training, with a broader staff training programme under development.
And staff now have quarterly appraisals rather than annual ones to better support open conversations with their managers and their ongoing development.
My team is fun to work with
There are many opportunities for employees to have their say and get involved, including monthly all-staff meetings and issue-specific away days. There's also a voluntary employee forum and ones for wellbeing and equality, diversity and inclusion. And cross-team projects allow staff to flex their skills beyond their daily roles.
The leader of this organisation runs this organisation based on sound moral principles
caba's developing a leadership framework to help managers become confident leaders capable of meeting the charity's future challenges. It already gives its leaders and managers the freedom to be creative and innovative. It trusts them to challenge actions that aren't in line with the charity's values and behaviours.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
caba gives all candidates the interview questions in advance to promote a level playing field, particularly for those who are neurodiverse. There's also a buddy system to ensure new starters have a familiar face to turn to outside their team and plans for a new starter network.
