Oxford-based YASA is perfectly placed to benefit from the move to hybrid and electric vehicles. Its revolutionary electric motors are compact and light-weight yet powerful, making them especially useful when there is limited powertrain space.
The company was launched in 2009 on the back of patented technology invented by Dr Tim Woolmer, Chief Technology Officer, while he was studying for his DPhil at Oxford University.
YASA's factory, which produces custom as well as off-the-shelf e-motors and controllers, kept working throughout the pandemic. An assessment of the infrastructure led to changes such as automated doors. Staff were provided with unlimited PPE and branded face masks. Face masks were also donated to a local school and care homes.
The pandemic brought greater engagement between staff and the senior management team as the latter strove to spend time in the production area, speaking to employees about how they were coping. On-site workers received treats such as surprise pizza days. For those working from home, there were virtual care packages, advice from a nutritionist and online events such as pub meets.
Throughout the pandemic, YASA continued training and development across the business. Recruitment also continued, allowing YASA to grow and to increase competencies still further.
I love working for this organisation
YASA likes to reward good service with bespoke gifts aligned to staff members' hobbies and passions. One worker with a passion for the sport of cycling got to meet an Olympic cyclist, thanks to an experience gift to mark his 10-year anniversary with the company.
This job is good for my own personal growth
YASA has introduced a training management system for all staff, with sessions on key topics such as working effectively remotely and longer courses on specific subjects, including corporate social responsibility. The company also sponsors qualifications and provides study leave to allow staff to prepare for exams.
This organisation has a strong social conscience
Staff are given three days off a year to volunteer in the local community. This includes anything from helping to dredge canals to supporting worm farms or lending a hand at food banks. The company offers work experience to school pupils.
