Those that join the crew of the UK Sailing Academy, a youth charity, benefit from a bespoke career pathway and the use of the Lighthouse, which offers a private space for coaching and mentoring.
The charity, which aims to inspire and support children and young people to broaden their horizons through inspirational water-based adventures, education and training for careers at sea, is based in a waterfront campus in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight.
More than 150 industry-leading courses, personal-development programmes and trips for schools and groups are provided as one-day events and fully-inclusive, residential courses. All of the activities are mapped to the charity's Skills for Life framework and the outcomes and insights are shared with the schools and group leaders to measure the impact of their experience and personal development.
Perks for employees include free use of kit outside work, a dedicated staff accommodation block and meals at work, as well as working in a beautiful location.
The benefits of working for the charity go beyond its staff offering, though. According to one staff member: “When we say we change lives, we really do and I get to see this every day. I love how we support individuals to believe in themselves and to find real hope and promise for the future. It takes just one person to believe in you to effect change, now imagine a whole team of people believing in you.”
My team is fun to work with
Family and friends fun days bring everyone together to live one of the charity's values: "Challenge, have fun and smile." Regular newsletters, along with all-staff meetings and communications, keep the culture alive. News and staff feedback is shared through the HR department's People Hub.
This job is good for my own personal growth
Employees are encouraged to do apprenticeships. The charity has introduced a leadership academy that offers a blended learning programme and it has seen positive change, growth and development in those who have taken part. The HR department supports aspiring leaders to develop in their role.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
The comprehensive rewards and recognition benefits package on offer includes giving out monthly golden tickets to those who have lived the charity's values or gone above and beyond. The golden ticket can be exchanged for a prize in the "goodie cupboard".
