HSDC is a prominent institution providing Further and Higher Education across three campuses in Hampshire. Formed through a series of mergers, HSDC now offers a wide array of study options, including A Levels, vocational courses, T Levels, UAL and BTEC qualifications, and apprenticeships. With over 6,500 students, HSDC's mission is to enable achievement, fulfil dreams, and raise aspirations within the community. HSDC's values, centred around kindness, respect, inclusion, and success, are not just words, they are embedded into the fabric of the organisation, shaping an open and supportive culture.
To ensure open communication, the Executive team at HSDC employs several platforms, including weekly in-person briefings, half-termly newsletters, and a robust intranet. The recently launched Campus Voice initiative further enables two-way communication between staff and leaders. Regular 'temperature check' surveys allow the leadership to keep a pulse on staff sentiment, and the feedback from these forms the basis of action plans, which are shared transparently with all staff.
HSDC also places a high emphasis on employee development, with a minimum of four Colleague Development Days per year, work shadowing opportunities across all levels, and a centralised hub for information and learning. The wellbeing of staff is prioritised, with MIND wellbeing first aiders providing confidential support, a Wellbeing Hub offering resources on financial and legal advice as well as wellbeing support, and health schemes like Cycle to Work, Eye Care, Flu Vaccine, and Health Checks. This dedicated focus on people sets HSDC apart as a leading educational institution.
I feel that my manager talks openly and honestly with me
Many managers are currently completing apprenticeships both internally and through the local university, and everyone at manager level has the support of an aligned people services business partner. Internal and external coaching is offered, as is a thorough induction process for new managers.
This organisation is run on strong values / principles
CEO and Principal Mike Gaston posts weekly Moment with Mike vlogs and there is an informal evening Time to Talk meeting with the Vice-Principal. Senior leaders all work to metrics set against the college's Drive to 25 strategic plan, and this filters through to teams in terms of performance plans and objective setting.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
With the college based at three different campuses, the pandemic actually encouraged people to work together on platforms such as Microsoft Teams, without having to gather in the same geographical place. This had the silver lining of cutting commutes and preventing travelling time or traffic getting in the way.
