Cardiff University Students' Union (CUSU) is among the top-ranking student unions in the UK, achieving third place in the WhatUni Student Choice Awards in 2020. As a student-led, independent part of the university, CUSU represents students and provides a diverse and inclusive range of activities and services that enrich academic life.
Operating from a purpose-built campus complex, the 100 professional and 300 student staff run a diverse range of services, including an advice team to help students overcome academic and welfare problems, a skills development service to improve employability, an activities team which supports 60 sports clubs and more than 200 societies and an entertainments team which runs virtual events.
It's known as a fun and vibrant place to work with a proud history of supporting student campaigns about issues important to them and putting the student voice at the heart of university decision-making. Teams are expected to work closely together to reach the collective goal of enhancing the lives of thousands of young people.
Movement within the company is encouraged and it strongly values capability over technical experience where possible. Many of the senior managers have grown their careers within the student movement after starting out on a voluntary basis with all decision-making filtered through the union's core values of diversity, inclusion and partnership.

The CEO has led a development group to review Diversity, Inclusion and Equality policies, which is open to all within the organisation and an example of how the senior management team (SMT) promotes core values. The SMT holds weekly one-to-ones with Sabbatical Officers to help tackle any challenges.
This job is good for my own personal growth
With student support a career choice, managers attend compulsory training courses such as IOSH Managing Safely and First Aid at Work. They are also encouraged to attend courses that would be beneficial to their role and support their professional and personal development.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
With a premium put on keeping staff healthy and happy, all-staff Q&As and virtual Tea & Talk sessions have been introduced. A staff newsletter provides information on mental health and wellbeing support and issues are signposted and communicated on a regular basis.
