Every employee at fire engineering firm Tenos has a voice in shaping the company's vision and direction.
The Manchester-based business – which has provided fire engineering solutions for landmark buildings worldwide – is set to finalise becoming an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) in 2023.
For Tenos, it's about giving team members the incentive 'to be the best that they can be for the business and themselves,' taking the opportunity to progress their careers and using their insight and experience to make the company a leader in its field.
By being an EOT, its team of around 50 employees benefit from rolling share options and a tax-free bonus worth more than £3,500 every year. The longer they stay at the company, the more shares they get.
And being an EOT makes Tenos an inherently 'listening' business. Following feedback on how it could be an even better place to work, the Board has become more effective at communicating decisions and updating on company performance.
Other improvements have included a company restructure to support more effective cross-office working, an additional management level to offer clear reporting lines and a new intranet to enhance communications.
With a purpose to 'ensure people can work, live and sleep, safe from the effects of fire', Tenos recognises it carries a big responsibility. That's why it's focused on developing talent and essential expertise, not 'just finding a person to fill a role.'

I feel proud to work for this organisation
During their induction, new recruits get time with the Managing Director to help them understand the company's history, vision and values. They also get to meet many key people from all levels, from the finance director to the admin team, to reassure them that there's always somebody on hand to help.
This job is good for my own personal growth
As it's a challenging process to become chartered and can take years to achieve, Tenos offers its employees expertise and project diversity to ensure they have the experience they need before they put in their Chartered Engineer applications. The company also has a formal mentor scheme.
